Happy Dr. Seuss Day!

This week, March 2nd marks the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss, whose imaginative books have sparked creativity and joy for generations. From The Cat in the Hat to Green Eggs and Ham, Dr. Seuss’s whimsical worlds have taught us the power of play, imagination, and learning through fun.

At Messy Bubs, we’re all about encouraging little ones to explore and learn through sensory play. So, in honour of Dr. Seuss Day, we’ve put together a simple, fun, and sensory-rich activity that you can easily set up at home for your little ones under 5!

Activity: “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” Sensory Bin

Inspired by the colourful and playful world of Dr. Seuss, this sensory bin activity is a wonderful way to engage children in imaginative, tactile play.

Materials:

  • A shallow bin or container

  • Red, blue, and yellow plastic fish (or cut out fish shapes from coloured paper)

  • Dried pasta for a no-mess option

  • Plastic spoons or small tongs

  • Small toy sea creatures (optional)

  • A small bowl of water (for the "fish" to swim in!)

Method:

  1. Fill the bin: Start by filling your shallow container with dried pasta for texture.

  2. Add the fish: Scatter the plastic fish or paper fish shapes over the sensory base.

  3. Introduce tools: Include small spoons or tongs for scooping and picking up the fish.

  4. Encourage exploration: Let your little one explore the sensory bin by picking up fish with the tools or their hands. You can guide them to sort the fish by colour or count how many they find.

Benefits of Play:

  • Sensory Development: The textures of pasta, combined with the visual stimulation of colourful fish, help to engage your child’s senses.

  • Fine Motor Skills: Using spoons or tongs helps develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

  • Creativity & Imagination: Inspired by Dr. Seuss’s playful characters, children can create their own stories and imaginative scenarios while playing.

How This Links to Dr. Seuss:

Dr. Seuss’s books encourage children to think outside the box, use their imagination, and embrace fun, just like the sensory play activity we’ve set up here!

The "One Fish, Two Fish" activity taps into the fun world of colour, counting, and play – elements that are central to Dr. Seuss’s creative works.

This easy-to-set-up sensory play is a perfect way to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day at home while enhancing developmental skills in a fun and interactive way.

So, grab your fish, set up the sensory bin, and dive into a world of colourful play that Dr. Seuss would be proud of!
